Ideally, USMLE preparation should begin 12–18 months before the planned exam date. Most students start with USMLE Step 1 during MBBS or internship. Early preparation helps in building strong concepts, but consistency and question-based learning are more important than starting very early.
No, coaching classes are not mandatory for the USMLE. Many students successfully clear USMLE using self-study resources such as First Aid, UWorld, and concept-based video platforms. Coaching may help with guidance and scheduling, but disciplined self-study and regular question practice are the real keys to success.
Most students require 2–3 focused revisions of core resources.

1st Pass: Concept building with First Aid and videos.
2nd Pass: Intensive UWorld question practice with review.
Final Revision: Rapid review of weak areas, notes, and incorrect questions.

In USMLE, understanding concepts and applying them clinically matters far more than memorizing facts.
